The most talked about Facebook change is here effective from today and you have until March 30 to get your page in order and hit the publish button. Here’s a breakdown for you:
Landing Tabs / Welcome Tabs are gone
You no longer have the ability to direct your Facebook Business Page to a landing tab. This means that those images you created or paid to have beautifully designed with a call to action ‘Like my page’ can no longer be the first thing that people see before they hit your wall. You can however still use these pages with a call to action in the app area. We are yet to hear if this will change so we’ll let you know if it does.
New Cover Photo & Profile Pic
Timeline means you will now have the ability to upload a custom designed Cover Photo and a Profile Pic. This means you need to upload a photo or talk to your graphic designer about getting an image measuring 851 x 315 pixels. You should use your Cover Photo image to represent your brand and change it as often as you like. According to Facebook your cover photo can not contain price/purchase information, contact information, references to interface elements such as ‘like’ or ‘share’ and no calls to action. Learn more here.
Your Profile Pic needs to measure 180 x 180 pixels and this will reduce to 30 x 30 pixels on screen. Facebook recommends that you designate this area to your logo. This makes sense because it will show up in the news feed next to your status updates.
Fans and non fans can now send you a private message (when you switch to timeline). This means that people have a private and direct way of contacting you right from within Facebook. Your private message can be viewed in the Admin Panel.
Pinning on your Timeline
You can now pin one status update to the top of your timeline. This means that you can choose one status update which will stay at the top of your timeline for 7 days (or less if you pin something else sooner). You might use this for any important information, a promotion or details about a competition.
Your applications are still here. They’ve moved to the right just underneath your Cover Photo. Your Photos Application will always appear first but you can change the order of the other three applications which are visible. You can have up to 12 applications at any one time but these are only available when people click on the number beside the applications.
Your Activity Log is accessible by clicking on the Admin Panel/Manage/Activity Log. Here you can go in and take a look at all of your status updates and make changes to the dates that they appeared on your Timeline. You can also delete posts so that they are no longer visible on your timeline or in your activity log.
Now it’s your turn to take a look around and see if you notice anything else that’s new. There are a lot of changes so explore and let me know if you have any questions. If you need someone to swap your page over to Timeline contact us to discuss.
