Why are you using social media for your business? I’m hoping that one of the main reasons is to leverage the power of viral word of mouth, to highlight your product or service offering and reinforce key retail periods. You want your page and your status updates to be acknowledged by existing fans and discovered by new fans. The way you achieve this is by actively encouraging engagement on your Facebook page. Engagement occurs when any of these actions are taken:
So my question is, do you think about all of these different forms of engagement when you set out to write a status update on your Facebook page? Do you think about the most compelling part of the story and relate this back to your target audience?
Here’s 6 examples of status updates for different types of retail stores. For each of these examples I’ve used a key message to demonstrate how I would use it in a Facebook status update:
|Retail Type||Key Message||Status Update Example|
|Fashion||Up to 50% off Women’s Jackets||Like if you love a bargain ladies! Today you can enjoy Up to 50% off in store but hurry it’s only while stocks last.|
|Food||New Spring Menu||We’ve just uploaded our new Spring Menu.
Take a look at this link and tag your friends in the comments below to give them the hint it’s time for a catch up at our restaurant!
|Homewares||All Cheese Platters now $10 off||Finish this sentence: My favourite cheese is_______.
All cheese platters now $10 off, offer ends Sunday.
|Health and Beauty||Free night cream with every facial||Do you LIKE a freebie?
For this month only, receive a free night cream when you experience our indulgent facial. Terms and Conditions apply
|Electronics||New iphone 5 is coming||Share this image with your friends if you’ve already ordered the new iPhone 5!|
|Footwear||Showcase different shoe styles: flats, sandals, wedges, pumps||What’s your shoe style?
Tag yourself in the photo that best describes your favourite shoe style!
These examples could be adapted easily to different types of businesses.
Now it’s over to you. Do you think that these types of status updates would encourage more engagement on your Facebook page. Be sure to keep in mind that your Facebook page should not be all about ‘selling’ or ‘mass communication.’ If you must do these things why not make the story interesting and relevant to your audience. If you are struggling to think about what you are going to post as your status updates, need someone to coordinate retailer participation (in shopping centres) or simply don’t have time to maintain your page please feel free to contact me, I’d love to discuss my services with you.
